I read this book after seeing the movie made from it. And while I enjoyed the book, this is a rare case where I think I prefer the movie. Of course, they are by nature very different, a story expressed in two different mediums. But I think the movie pared down some of the narrative that seemed to ramble on too long in the book, made certain points or characters clearer and more endearing, respectively. Some characters were changed completely in the movie, and I think those were good decisions. But I DID like it, and would definitely recommend it.
